Let me tell you about the remarcable family of
Argento!
Born in rome on the 9th of July,1940 the son of the famous and artistic
producer Salvatore Argento, started his career in a not so different
profession.Working at a local newspaper in Rome called "Paesa Sera
(64-69)" Dario begun his journey towords the film industry as a film critic.
During his time at the paper he begun to wright movie scripts, one of the
most remembered ones must be Sergio Leones MASTERPIECE
Once Opon A Time In
The West, co written in 1969 by Bernando Bertolucci.
As a Director dario
debued whith the shocking dark tale called "The Bird Whith The Crytal-
Plumage" (L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo). This film was made during
1969 an was receved as a work of genious and still is.(The music score
by Morricone must not be forgotten). The typical camera work of italian
film makers is obvious in this very beutiful film about an author who got
dragged in to a homocide investigation when wittnesing a murder. Obssessed
whith finding the killer he becomes the target not the bullet. I guess that
i must give some credit to Vittorio Storaro for his exelent photo skills.
Even though Darios skills will improve during the years to come i think
that this bird is to important to forget...
"The Bird will be back in
the 1976 film Suspiria."
Cat Onine Tails (Il Gatto a Novre Code 1971)
will become Darios second feature film as a Director "Who will forget the
wallpaper in that film?" Then came Four Fies On Grey Velvet
(Quattro Mosche di velluto Grigo 1971), a film that apparantly
had a deep inpact on Darios wife. She was apparantly whith Dario on the
films first screening telling him "Do you realy hate me that much?"after
seeing it.
After For Flies... you will find a great change in Darios
films. They will become more intence and terefying than ever befor.
A prime example is the 1975 film Deep Red (Profondo Rosso).
Staring David Hemmings as Marc Daily, this film realy plays tricks on your
mind, why does the seamingly meaningless murders take place? Who is the
killer in the dark raincoat and shiny black gloves? The music made by Goblins will stick in your
mind for weeks after seeing the film. The sceanery seams like something out
of a Hopper painting, stange people and a creapy enviroments running in
the speed of light, you will get all limp in your knees after whatshing this
film.
If you have the nerves you might want to see one of my favorit films
"Suspiria 1976" A film showing the directors full skills in making an
estetic film. Lights settings action and great acting makes this one
worth owning. You will truley be amased that this 20 year old film will
give you goosebumps all over! Dario gives you the frightning music score
together with Goblins. This one makes murder seem like art! Scery isnt
it? In the film i was amased to find the gifted Joan Bennet can it be
a tribute?
Only Dario knows...
The director becomes more and more
interested in finding out new ways to use the camera. Even though you will
find experimental sequenses in some of Darios erlier films like Four Flies
On Grey velvet, it becomes more frequently used to create suspense in the
later films.
Susperia is the first film in a trilogy followed by "Inferno
1980" the third film in the trilogy is not yet made and i think its worth
waiting for. its better to have a great script to work whith in a trilogy
than to make a film just to fill the gap. In Inferno you will be struck by
the obsene music ringing in you head (n na nana na na na nana na na
naanaaa).
Red flashing light and wallpaper. Totaly crazy naibours and connections
whith she story in Susperia makes Polanskis The Tenent seem like a cartoon
for kids. Working whith classical music in fhe films score is not a bad ide!
Verdi seems to have made his music for the films of Dario Argento.
After
completing the film inferno Dario made a new (detectiv) thriller called
"Tenebrae 1982". This time more refined than the erlier films but, whith
the same consept of deciving us the audiance to belive that we know who the
killer is. Just when you think you have it new clues appear shattering your
theories. No one does this better than the Maistro Dario. It takes great
skill to make such a tangeled story whithout dropping the lead. The gore
in this film is massive but not so disturbing. The blood belongs to the
story unlike other "exploitation films" made just for the gore hounds
desires. This is realy an inteligent work of art.
It might not turn you
into a better person but what the hell...
